How Domino Necklaces Reflect Creativity And Perseverance

Friday, January 25th, 2008

Handcrafted jewelry is probably one of the most popular trends of our times, people wear it on various occasions from casual to very formal with the feeling that they are unique and stylish at the same time. All the more appreciation goes to those who are capable of making their own jewels, by collaging and using all sorts of small disparate objects. This is how domino necklaces appeared: there is elegance and beauty in the lack of uniformity specific to domino necklaces, they reflect creativity and perseverance. Who would have thought that some domino pieces for instance, with which you may have spent hours playing, will one day be worn around the neck?

Depending on the color of the domino necklaces, they are more or less reminders of some forms of folk art. There is a variety of styles specific to this type of jewelry: some bear the influence of pop culture, some others of art, not to mention that abstract pieces are held in high esteem. Furthermore, though we are used to calling them domino necklaces, some of them are not necessarily made of the actually game pieces, but rather of a variety of multi-colored “stones” tied together on a special ribbon. Such “domino necklaces” easily combine swarowski crystals, coral, turquoise, lapis lazuli and more.

If you want to purchase domino necklaces you’ll be easily tempted to get a look at the domino ear rings too; they are usually in the same set, as it is very difficult to match such a necklace with any other type of jewelry. Many people are even interested in manufacturing their own domino necklaces at home, and if you have the curiosity, a short search on the Internet will bring you all the details about what to do next and what steps to follow in order to be satisfied with the result.

The prices for domino necklaces vary from a few to over a hundred dollars, depending on the stones that have been used in the design. You’ll definitely expect to pay more for some jewelry that includes semiprecious stones or gems, than for some plastic or wood domino pieces. The material they are made of seldom spoils the beauty of the design and the interest the buyer has in such a combination of art and decorative accessories. Look for your old dominoes, maybe some day, you’ll want to try your hand at jewelry design too!

Citizen Brings Worldwide Radio Control Accuracy to the Skyhawk

Thursday, January 3rd, 2008

The new 3rd generation Citizen Skyhawk promises a whole range of high-tech features, including but not limited to radio controlled atomic time updates from Europe, Asia and America; ensuring accurate time keeping almost worldwide. The Skyhawk is available now in two variations, stainless steel bracelet and leather strap, at the fairly modest price tag of £349 and £299 respectively.

Throughout October, November and December the Skyhawk is set to feature in several magazines, papers, TV shows and even tube stations throughout the UK as part of a massive advertising campaign to highlight the new flagship Skyhawk and its huge list of features.

The Skyhawk A-T is capable of displaying time for 43 cities worldwide, and also updates the daylight saving setting and calendar where available from the atomic time signal. The chronograph feature is accurate to 1/100th of a second and is capable of measuring up to 24 hours. The Skyhawk watch also features 2 separate alarm settings, a digital display light, a GMT/UTC display, rotating slide bezel and is fully water resistant to 200 metres.

As is common place with all recent Citizen Watches, they receive power via solar rays. The Eco-Drive technology allows the watch to last 180 days, and up to a staggering 30 months with the automatic power save function. Once the watch has been fully charged, everyday office light is sufficient to ensure the watch remains sufficiently charged and therefore it is very uncommon for the watch to ever require any additional attention after charging, giving you more piece of mind that your watch is keeping completely accurate time.

The accuracy of the watch is within that of the atomic time source when the radio control function is activated, making it incredibly precise. When the watch is manually set, it still keeps to the accuracy of an ordinary quartz watch, usually loosing less than 1 second a day when being worn. This makes the watch perfect for anyone who needs to use accurate time, with little or no problems.

Bring Back the Shine with a Jewelry Cleaner

Thursday, January 3rd, 2008

Jewelry shines if it is properly cleaned and polished. Whether its emeralds, sapphires, or diamonds, these treasures go dull without cleaning. Silver, platinum, or gold is usually used as the setting for these gems. Some of the jewels are antiques that have been handed down from ancestors from one generation to the next. Jewelry can lose its shine if it is not properly cared for with a good jewelry cleaner. Some jewelry cleaners can be harmful to some jewels, so it’s important to know which ones to pick to prevent harming your treasures.

Each type of jewelry requires a particular type of cleaning care. Jewelry owners should investigate the jewelry cleaners to make sure that they buy the best one for their jewelry. There are jewelry cleaners that simply remove the tarnish from metals such as silver that have a tendency to tarnish with time. One also gets strips that keep tarnish away from the metal that you can store with the jewelry and that makes cleaning them a less frequent task. Keeping the jewelry in special jewel bags can also help in eliminating the need to clean them frequently since the bags keep dirt away from the jewelry. The cost of the jewelry cleaner should be worth keeping these treasures bright and shiny.

The main purpose of jewelry cleaners is to maintain that brand new look of the jewelry when you purchased it. However, you should be careful because substances in some cleaners could inadvertently harm or destroy your jewelry. Some effective jewelry cleaners are bubbling tablets that are safe for some types of jewelry. There’s usually a container for the tablets that measure out exactly the right amount of cleaner for the maximum effect. This type of cleaner is very convenient because it’s portable and can be taken with you on vacations and trips.

Some of the latest technology is used to make jewelry cleaners that are sonic type boxes for cleaning jewelry. They are very effective for reaching into all the very tiny spaces in the jewelry design and clean out the dirt and build up from those spaces. By getting rid of the tiniest dirt and grime, the sonic devices are able to put back all the sparkle in your jewelry. These are also versatile machines that can clean different types of jewelry such as watchbands and even keys. Some of these machines come with timers so the jewelry is kept in the cleaner for just the right amount of time. Some device uses temperature to clean jewelry, and the also come with temperature controls to prevent the harming of the jewelry by excessive heat. Some of these machines can clean with just water so there are no harmful substances such as ammonia that could damage fine jewelry.

Jewelry As A Gift, For Men

Thursday, January 3rd, 2008

A sudden thought: go down to the store and buy your man some jewelry. It can be the one thing he never expected you to give him, because, really, what man would ever expect to receive jewelry? The question to ask is: why would he even want jewelry? The word brings up images of feminine desires, girly interests, and womanly pursuits; that is to say, jewelry is to female what cars are to male. Not even a self-respecting, politically-correct, well-bred, educated soul could deny that familiar stereotype. So might it be time for the average person to wise up to the limits of jewelry?

The purpose of jewelry is the same between sexes, as it is used to accentuate or to amplify the wearer’s wardrobe. It’s perfect for men as much as it is for women (although for the more casual-minded man, earrings and necklaces can generally be considered an acquired taste).

A recurring item concerns the ring. Some prefer to call it a band. In spite of preference, the two words describe a circular-shaped metal that slips onto the finger. All too frequent are the golden ones. Ladies, give your hus-bands a little something different. Either spice up the gold-colored “traditional” rings/bands, or give them up. For what some may perceive to be a cheap move, go for the stainless steel or tungsten bands; they at least look different and at the same time cost less than gold. The price a little too, well, small? Top it off with a diamond or two. Believe me, for what men generally like to wear, anything besides yellow can be considered to be more than a solid match.

And if your hus-band is the kind who favors a tuxedo or is a suit-wearing man, then cuff links and tie clips require little to no introduction. Unlike bands, either type of accessory comes in a variety of unique shapes. Don’t be so casual in selecting them. Decide on which of your man’s suit you wish to match, and custom pick each item for it. To give a gift that especially goes with a favorite suit can not only be a fun challenge, but it will also serve as a useful and long-lasting addition to the wardrobe.

Now to discuss a more topical, yet still casual, item: bracelets. Bracelets can be just as nuanced as a band or even a tie clip. Who can say that only women can wear them? Bracelets are like watches, only without the watch. And watches can look bulky or even distracting; whereas a bracelet will always be simple enough to accentuate just about any outfit. For those men with a watch they cannot let out of their sights, let them know that they have not one arm but two. A bracelet on the opposite wrist is a perfect compliment for that weary wearer of watches. Just be sure to have them fit snugly, lest it slide and rattle like the getup of a carnival psychic.

So thus, consider buying your man jewelry accessories. If he likes to play around with his wardrobe, admires a certain suit, or plain does not want to part with his collection, then jewelry is a certain bet to add to what he already wears.

Going global: Tuareg jewelry in the international marketplace

Thursday, July 19th, 2007

over the last thirty years, the silver jewelry of the Tuareg has gained increasing recognition in Europe and America as missionaries, aid workers, Peace Corps volunteers, and tourists visited Mali, Niger, and southern Algeria. They often returned with souvenirs and, on occasion, sufficient quantities of jewelry to sell. Tuareg inadan (male smiths) have also occasionally traveled to the West to sell their jewelry and have established commercial relationships with “ethnic” jewelry shops in some Western cities (especially Paris and New York).Tuareg jewelry has been the subject of numerous exhibitions in France, Germany, Belgium, and Spain, such as “Touaregs” at the Musee de l’Homme (1993), “Touareg” at the Musee royal de l’Afrique centrale, Tervuren (1994), and “Tuareg, Nomades del desierto” exhibited at several museums in Spain under the sponsorship of Fundacion “la Ciaxa” (2001). Tuareg jewelry, leather and wood objects, and other pieces such as camel saddles have entered the collections of several museums, such as the Musee d’ethnographie, Neuchatel; Musee du Quai Branly, Paris; Bardo Museum, Algiers; and UCLA Fowler Museum of Cultural History. Jewelry has also been the subject of books and articles over the last three decades (Creyaufmuller 1983, Gabus 1982, Gottler 1989, Loughran 1996, Mikelsen 1976, Rasmussen 1997a) and is a significant component of the upcoming exhibition “Art of Being Tuareg: Sahara Nomads in a Modern World” (UCLA Fowler Museum of Cultural History, October 15, 2006-February 26, 2007; the Cantor Arts Center at Stanford University, May 30-September 2, 2007; and the National Museum of African Art, Smithsonian Institution, October 10, 2007-January 27, 2008).

Painstakingly compiled and with an expert, knowledgeable commentary by Shelby J. Tisdale, Fine Indian Jewelry Of The Southwest: The Millicent Rogers Museum Collection offers an impressively informative history and survey of the southwestern Native American jewelry that is represented in the collection of the Millicent Rogers Museum as the result of art patron and passionate collector Millicent Rogers who assembled a spectacular collection of Navajo and Zuni silver and turquoise, Hopi silverwork, and Pueblo stone and shell jewelry during the late 1940s and early 1950s. Of special interest is the chapter devoted to “The Origins of Indian Jewelry in the Southwest”. Profusely illustrated and a very strongly recommended addition to personal, academic, and community library Native American Studies reference collections, Fine Indian Jewelry Of The Southwest is enhanced for scholars and non-specialist general readers alike with the inclusion of a glossary, references, and an index.

Art Jewelry - The Eye and the Hand of the Artist

Tuesday, May 29th, 2007

Mass-produced jewelry often looks more uniform and sometimes lacks the variation that speaks of the hand and eye of the individual artist. Machine made jewelry is produced using pattern and perfect repetition with the focus primarily on profitability. Even though mass-produced jewelry may appear as handmade, that does not mean it was actually handcrafted. Even though mass-produced jewelry of common styles is sometimes less expensive, because less expensive to make, it is not always so. Mass-produced jewelry rarely has special meaning or a history attached to it–it does not have a story or a bit of the maker’s life embedded into it.

Handcrafted Jewelry

While machine made jewelry is produced from patterns and consistent repetition, the charm of handmade art jewelry is its variation from similar, but not identically same pieces. Art jewelry shows the creativity, concentration, time, skill and dedication required of the artist to create his/her original. Artists and designers making art jewelry use old metal smith skills, simple tools and a variety of age-old techniques to create new, intriguing forms and shapes. In addition to the craftsmanship involved, art jewelry often speaks or refers to the individuality and personal meaning of the artist as well as their cultural identity and personal themes.

Love and Passion

Handmade jewelry offers the pleasure of unique, often rare designs that are not identical and are created with great love and passion. Art jewelry designers often use natural, high quality materials such as precious metals, precious and natural gemstones, antique components and organic elements such as coral, leather, wood, bone, amber and pearls. They go to great lengths to design unusual, unexpected combinations of shapes, forms, colors and combinations of materials.

Many art jewelers today, have a ‘branded’ look to their work. The brand may be recognized by the specific collection of materials used, by a highly developed approach to design or to an interesting or unusual technique. Each artist attaches their name to the work and is proud of the reputation they have. For jewelry artists, the creation of new jewelry is a passionate aspect of their life. They enjoy every minute of their work, whether working as the designer or the fabricator or the seller sharing their story with others.

An Art Form

Jewelry is an art form. Painters and sculptors embed their artwork with great strength of feeling that comes through their design process and the finished work. In the same way, art jewelry often reflects the personal touch and style and expresses the individuality and interests of the artist creating it. Many jewelry artists have training in art and design, although others are self-taught.

These artists commonly speak about the fascination they have always had in working with their hands. They talk about linking their soul, mind and body together in the process of conceiving a new idea and then creating something new and exciting. Jewelry artists often say that they play with the materials in an imaginary space and then see the materials evolve and transform into components which become in turn, a new form of jewelry. Artists also talk about the silent conversations they have with themselves as new ideas begin to flow and come together for the new piece. They are dedicated to their artistic way of life.

How To Keep Your Jewelry Looking Brand New :

Jewelry Tips, Do’s & Don’ts

Storage

When you’re not wearing your jewelry try to keep it in an area where it will not be exposed to moisture, heat, and if possible try to keep it air tight (meaning the less amount of air that’s exposed to the jewelry the better.) The best policy is to keep your jewels in a zip tight baggy or other storage where it is not exposed to the outside environment.

Cleaning

One of the best habits you can get into is cleaning your jewelry regularly. Just like the car you drive and the clothes you wear different forms of dust, dirt, etc. are prone to locking onto your precious jewels. There are different methods used to clean jewelry but the most common is brushing with warm, soapy water with a soft brush (preferably non-metallic so it will not harm the stones or make any scratches.) Cleaning clothes specially made for polishing jewelry are also made which are commonly used. Try to avoid rough cleaning devices such as paper towels to wipe down jewelry as it may produce scratches as well. If you are ever unsure if you should or shouldn’t use an item to clean jewelry then you probably should avoid using it. If you’re afraid to try different cleaning methods because of the value of your jewelry or for whatever reason it is always best to let a professional handle your cleaning. You can always ask the professional your questions about cleaning your jewelry and then you should be more comfortable with cleaning yourself. Also keep in mind that gold tends to scratch easier than most other metals. Try to use extra care when dealing with this metal. Avoid using toothpaste to as a cleaning agent. Certain substances in toothpastes may cause damage to certain jewels. Use caution when using cleaners that are purchased in stores. Make sure to fully read the instructions and follow directions accurately. Some require soaking jewelry for seconds and leaving your jewels in the cleaner longer than recommended can do harm.

Don’ts!

Chlorine Bleach!

I’ve read stories of how chlorine bleach has ruined beautiful rings, etc. Try to stay away from it at all costs. One of the best ways to avoid accidents like leaving rings in your pants is to thoroughly check all your pockets before washing your clothes…you’ll probably find some spare change too! Also remember that there’s chlorine in that backyard pool of yours too. Take those jewels off before taking a dive or the value of your jewelry may take one for you!

Light Duties only!

Try not to wear your jewelry when doing heavy-duty, very physical activities. If you wear rings and have chores to do such as working on your car or washing dishes it is better to leave it in a safe place than to risk scratching it, getting it caught on something, or getting something on it that will decrease its value.

Chemicals Not Good!

Different things around the house that may seem harmless can actually do more damage than you think to your gems. Try to put on jewelry after you’ve applied make-up, perfumes, colognes, sun tan lotion, etc.

Below is a list of gemstones with a fun fact about each one as well as the preffered cleaning method that would be best to be used. As a rule of thumb, your best solution for cleaning any gem is soap & water.
