Shop Like A Pro

Wednesday, April 11th, 2007

Dressing well doesn’t mean that you have to suffer through long hours of shopping only to return home with nothing to wear. Nor does it mean that you have to spend loads and loads of money. If the thought of shopping overwhelms you, relax, and let me give you a few of my secrets to shopping like a pro.

First things first – Make a plan! Always know what you need to purchase before going shopping. Keep an ongoing list in or near your closet so when you come across something that you need but don’t have, you’ll be able to jot it down. Clothing shopping without a list is like going grocery shopping when you are hungry. You will always end up with something you don’t need!

Think about what you should wear to go shopping – It’s best to wear something that is comfortable and easy to get in and out of because it is never a good idea o buy a piece of clothing without trying it on first. You never know if it looks best on the hanger or on you. And, when choosing the outfit you will wear to go shopping, don’t forget about shoes! After all, you will be doing a lot of walking. It is also a good idea to steer clear of a lot of distracting jewelry.

Now that we have discussed the two most important tips that will prepare you for shopping, let’s move on to the shopping experience itself. Below you will find tips from everything from the best times of the day to shop to what to splurge on and what to save on.

1. The best times of the day to go shopping is when the mall or boutique is at its slowest – such as weekday mornings. If you must go on a weekend, try to get to the store when it opens.
2. Get to know the salespeople at your favorite boutiques. They will call you when your size or style of clothing comes in. You may get first “dibs” on the most popular items.
3. Invest in classic pieces. Don’t feel guilty for investing in a timeless purse, shoes, LBD (little black dress), or a versatile suit.
4. Steer clear of sales racks if you are a sucker! You will more than likely be swayed by the discounted price and end up buying something you don’t need and possibly will never wear. Many stores have a “No Return” policy on reduced items. So, play it safe.
5. Believe in fate…if you spot something that you absolutely love and can’t stop thinking about it for days afterwards, it may be a sign that you need to go back to the store and try it on!
6. Don’t be afraid to try new things! This is one rule I stress to all of my clients. Try something on before you rule it out completely.
7. Look for well-made clothing. In many instances, you can buy clothes that are both well made and reasonably priced. But be careful - look for unfinished hems, loose threads, and mismatched patterns. If you spot any of these things…move along.
8. Look for the latest trends in accessories such as purses, necklaces, and shoes. You will be able to incorporate the latest trend into your existing wardrobe without looking like a fashion victim.

Shopping like a pro doesn’t have to be difficult or overwhelming. It’s fun and rewarding! Just think of all of the great purchases you will make if you incorporate good shopping practices into every trip to the mall or your favorite boutique.

Discover 2007’s New Fashion Style

Wednesday, April 11th, 2007

Every year around this time all the Glam and Style magazines are a buzz as to what the designers unveiled at “fashion week”. 2007 seems to be no exception, as women everywhere want to know what fabrics, textures, colors and accessories are hot. Although spring has just begun, this article will discuss the new fashion styles already exploding on the scene.

With so many fashion designers out there, they don’t always seem to agree on all the new fashion styles presented on the runway. One thing they do agree on is the “preppy/prissy look”. To achieve this look, wear an Oxford shirt with either a tennis skirt (Yes! They are back in style) or a mini skirt (but not too MINI, so where as each step you take reveals what God gave you). If you really want to achieve this look, add a color coordinated tailored blazer. Topping the look off with a pair of strappy or chuncky sandals. For the more athletic look, wear a bright colored tank tee with a fresh pair of cool sneakers.

Another unanimous inclusion to this year’s fashion style is embellishment. Done the wrong way and embellished clothing spells DISASTER. The way to avoid this is by finding monochromatic pieces. This meaning clothing with diamond studs, beads, etcetera with a single color. Favorites the designers love are silver, copper and bronze. Most popular are the blouses or dresses adorned with crystals, beads or even edgy studs that move freely and flow fashionably on the body. When you find a blouse or a dress that is simply “to die for”, go for the total “glam look” by adding a pair of strappy or chunky high heels and a matching handbag.

Patent leather has resurfaced as another hot material. It’s popping up on more than just accessories this season. You can find patent leather coats, skirts, purses and shoes. The “new patent leather” gives a boost of high gloss finish anywhere it presents itself. However, you must keep in mind to make sure to keep it simple when wearing this material, so not to have it clash with other textures that are also on the scene.

Finally, the finishing touch….accessories. Statement jewels are all the rave this season. Showing up on everyone who is anyone, from New York, NY to Milan. Bangles on one or both wrists will make any ensemble you put on, sizzle with pizazz! (Most designers recommend gold, it never goes out of style) If bangles aren’t for you, you may feel more comfortable in a big bold necklace with matching earrings (something with spring colors that compliment what you are wearing). Embellished handbags are always a bonus.

These are just SOME of the new fashion styles hitting all major and minor department stores worldwide. With all the different designers, styles, prints, textures and colors, it’s enough to have you feeling overwhelmed. With a little time and practice, you be able to pick out the perfect ensemble and accessories in an instant! A guarantee to feel as beautiful as you will look!!

4 Bidding Tools To Get The Best Deals On Plus Size Clothing On EBay

Wednesday, April 11th, 2007

I’m always surprised when I talk to people about eBay and I find out that they don’t understand the bidding process. I have had thousands of transactions on eBay, and I forget how nervous and confusing bidding can be at first. Once you learn the in’s and out’s of bidding, you can really increase your chance of winning great auctions for lower prices.

1. Bidding Basics – The most common mistake I hear about is that people think that when they enter a bid, the auction will instantly go up to that amount. This results in them bidding lower than they actually want to pay and then trying to return to the auction over and over again to bid the item up little by little. Luckily eBay has an automatic bidding system so you can enter your highest amount the first time and eBay will bid on your behalf up to that maximum amount, but the auction may never reach that amount. For instance if an item has a bid of $5.00 and you would be willing to pay $15.00 for that item, you could enter $15.00 as your maximum bid and eBay will bid on your behalf up to $15.00. Your bid would raise the price up to $5.50, but it would not go higher than that unless someone else has entered a higher maximum bid than $5.50. There is no reason to bid in small increments and keep returning to see if you need to bid again. EBay will do all that for you. Go ahead and put your maximum bid in the first time. When I am bidding I do this and then I don’t return to the item until the auction is over. This prevents me from getting into a competitive bidding war that may cause me to pay more than I really want to just for competition’s sake. I once had 2 ladies bid up past $200 on a $30 dress, just because they didn’t want the other to win the auction. I bet the winner was the sorry one when she realized she had to pay over $200 just to beat the other lady! The real kicker is that I had 2 of these dresses. I emailed the second bidder and offered her a second chance offer, meaning she could buy the second dress for her highest bid of $199. She told me that she would never spend that much on this dress, she just didn’t want the other lady to win. The next week she won that second dress from me for $30. Had they not been so competitive with each other, they could have both had that dress for around $30. Don’t get sucked into the competitiveness of the bidding process.

2. Search Completed Listings to Determine Your Maximum Bid - Before I bid on an item, I like to find out exactly what a fair price for the item is. I do this by searching for item I want and then click the box on the left hand side of the screen with all of eBay’s searching tools that says, “completed items”. Then I sort these items from lowest to highest to see how cheaply my item has been selling for in the last 30 days. Usually the top 10% and the bottom 10% of the selling prices are flukes so I look to see the low end of the average price range and I pick my price from there. Then I start bidding. I enter my maximum bid (that I picked out from the low end of the average price range of the completed items) and then if I get outbid, I just bid on a different auction. Sometimes I have to bid on several auctions over time to get my price, but I eventually always get the lower price that I picked out from the completed listings.

3. Time of Day – Because so many people try to bid at the last minute of an auction, you can get better prices by bidding on auctions that are going to end in the middle of the night when there are less people bidding.

4. Sniping – This can be controversial technique. Some sellers really hate it, but it is a valid technique. Sniping is when you bid in the last few seconds of the auction hoping to bid late enough that no one has time to bid against you. If everyone always entered their maximum bid amount sniping wouldn’t work, but since so many eBayers don’t bid like that, sniping can get you an auction for a pretty low price, because your competition doesn’t have time to respond. Sometimes I snipe when I think an auction is going really low, too low, for what it is. I assume that there are a lot of last minute bidders and I don’t want to tip them off that I also want the item. There are 2 dangers to sniping. The first is that someone else has entered a maximum bid higher than your snipe amount. Ebay will automatically bid up to that for them after your snipe and you won’t have time to respond. If you’ve entered your maximum amount in the snipe, this won’t matter, but if you only enter an amount 50 cents above the current bid, you may loose. The second danger and the one I hear the most complaints about is that you miss the end of the auction and forget to bid in time. I get emails weekly from would-be bidders expressing regret to me that they missed the end of my auction. This is an easy fix. There are many sniping services out there that will automatically snipe an auction for you. I use BidNip.com. It is a very cheap service. If you win the auction with their sniping service, they charge you 25 cents. If you don’t win, they charge you nothing. Again, enter the maximum amount you are willing to pay with the sniping service and they will enter it for you with eBay.

Spring Fashion Forecast

Wednesday, April 11th, 2007

Living in LA, we are completely spoiled by our weather. There is little difference between the seasons, so forgive us, if we are not quite as excited about the imminence of spring as the rest of the world. We haven’t had to suffer through five months of snow and rain. For us, spring is less about the change in the weather and the hopes of getting our legs out, as it is an opportunity to refine our wardrobes and add a little more color to them. By following theses three spring trends you can get your spring look off to a great start no matter where you live and what your budget may be.

Geometry Lesson
Spring is often associated with Easter, pastels, cherry blossoms, and worrying about your newly exposed pasty legs. This spring however, you can forget about pastels, as it’s all about bright, bold, retro and geometric prints. Add some color and warmth to your days with a boldly printed skirt or dress.

This trend does require some extra care and attention. The loud prints have the potential to upstage you, so try to find a print that complements your natural coloring. If you are fair, look for prints with slightly lighter colors, possibly against a white background. Women with darker hair and skin can pull off brighter prints more easily. If you feel like you are getting lost in your dress, you can always pair a bold skirt with a solid colored top to tone the look down a bit.

Designers from every price point can be seen working this trend. From Milly and Iodice Hilda, to Forever 21, everyone should be able to find a piece that will suit them and their budget.

Sweet Creams
The springtime equivalent to the little black dress is the little cream dress. White tends to look too harsh on our not quite tanned yet bodies. Save white for the dead of summer after you’ve spent a little time at the beach or the pool. Cream, however still gives that light, fresh, feminine look, without creating too much contrast.

My favorite spring dresses incorporate texture into the pattern or print. Try to find a cream dress that has texture in the fabric or details such as eyelet or lace, interesting piping, or great buttons. This creates interest and movement in your monochromatic look. You can also accessorize with a little color to create added drama. Try pairing a cream dress with a muted metallic shoe or a brightly colored cuff.

Cream dresses are everywhere right now. You can find them in a multitude of styles such as A line, trapeze, empire, and shift. Check out the spring collections of 3.1 Philip Lim, Chloe, BCBG, and Vanitas for great creamy delights.

Trapeze Act
The juvenile silhouette of the trapeze top or jacket is popping up in collections and stores the world over. This look, which flares out from under the bust is great for almost anyone, especially if you are having a fat day. With so much extra fabric to swish around, you can’t help but feel younger, thinner, and more feminine when sporting this trend.

Counter act the little girl look by glaming up your trapeze top with skinny jeans and killer heels. Finish off the look with sophisticated accessories. You can also pair leggings with muted metallic heels or ankle boots with your trapeze dress for a funky take on this trend.

Gucci, Derek Lam, Peter Som, and Giambattista Valli are just a few of the designers that successfully incorporated the trapeze silhouette into their spring 2007 collections.

Remember, spring fashion is a little more fun and flirty this year. Dare to be bold in a great print. Find yourself a feminine cream dress, and tap in to your inner child in an amazingly comfortable yet fashionable trapeze dress. Each of these trends can be found at any price, from your local Forever 21 to the latest ready to wear collections. Enjoy finding the pieces that are perfect for you and your budget, then put your own spin on them!

Unconventional Pearl Jewelry - The New Fashion Trend

Wednesday, April 11th, 2007

When most of us think about pearl jewelry, what comes to mind is a pearl necklace or pearl earrings. Pearl jewelry has come to be associated with elegant simplicity. Increasingly, however, fashionistas are trending toward more unconventional pearl jewelry.

Pearl Colors

Pearls are always white, right? Wrong. Tahitian pearls are black, and freshwater pearls can be white, black, pink, or purple. South Sea pearls can be cream colored, golden yellow, and even silver. While black and creamy white pearls command top dollar, pearls in other colors can be equally lustrous and beautiful - and eminently more affordable.

Pearl Shapes

The classic pearl shape is round, and the rounder a pearl is, the more expensive it is. An Akoya pearl necklace, for example, is made from round white pearls, while a Tahitian pearl necklace is usually made from round black pearls. Most people don’t realize that pearls actually grown in a variety of shapes, from teardrops to sticks to asymmetrical shapes. When you choose pearls that aren’t in the traditional round shape, your pearl jewelry becomes a unique personal statement.

Pearl Settings

Once you get away from the traditional round white pearl necklace and plain pearl earrings, the fashion possibilities are endless. For example, you can select a multicolored pearl pendant with three pearls, one pink, one black, and one white. Or you can opt for pearl earrings that add a Swarovski crystal roundel and a fiery red carnelian stone. You can even choose multiple strands made from freshwater pearls, silver, Hematite, and crystals. Depending on how you overlap the strands, you can wear them as a necklace, bracelet, belt, or choker.

Lately, spectacular coin pearl earrings have been catching on. Lustrous and energetic with their tropical purple color, the pearls are fairly flat and are accented with Swarovski crystals set off in silver roundels. Similarly, coin pearl bracelets can be seen on the wrists of trendsetters. These bracelets take, for example, copper coin pearls and accent them with Swarovski crystals, silver roundels, and a toggle clasp.

Other Colorful Pearl Jewelry Combinations

Pearls and Swarovski crystals aren’t the only pairing worn by fashionistas. For a cool, colorful summer look, multicolored pearls (sometimes up to ten different colors) are combined with a dozen different colors of seashell pieces to create a vibrant necklace. For an extraordinary evening look, irregularly shaped freshwater pearls are combined with irregular shapes of bright coral and gold spacers to protect the pearls. This kind of chunky necklace is the perfect accessory to the simpler, more tailored lines in fashion this spring and summer.

When it comes to buying pearl jewelry, tradition certainly has its place. But it’s important to remember that pearl jewelry can also make a fashion statement, and can be incorporated into your everyday personal style.

The Hidden Secrets of a Fashion Stylist

Wednesday, April 11th, 2007

So, you think that all of those girls you see on the cover of your favourite magazine and on TV really look that way? They don’t come into the photo shoot like that. Just watch an episode of America’s Next Top Model and you will see what I mean. It’s what happens behind the scenes that is the real magic.

Recently, I worked on a television game show (sorry, I can’t tell you the name) that featured beautiful models dressed in sexy outfits. They wanted the girls to be leggy and showing a lot of cleavage. Models are not typically busty, so we had to make them that way. The big secret here is a plunging push up bra and silcone gel inserts. Sometimes, we would even add extra padding into the bra to get the right shape. Panty lines are a no no in this industry, so we used a seamless thongs made from the thinnest microfibre fabric. To prevent the models from “falling out” of their cleavage bearing outfits, we placed two-way tape on the inside of their dresses and stuck it to their skin. Sometimes, we even sewed a few tacks through their outfit and bra so that it wouldn’t shift. During long days of shooting, we would make adjustments or replace the tape as needed.

On another photo shoot for a hair salon, the models had to look like Bond Girls. For a braless look that still looks perky, I placed peel and stick advesive bras on the models and ran duct tape from underarm to underarm below their breasts to lift them up. The advesive bra prevents the duct tape from being stuck directly to skin. To add additional cleavage, I placed a cut off knee high filled with rice and knotted just under the breast and taped them right to the advesive bras. The final touch was rubbing baby oil onto their legs and arms to give it that sexy touch.

You can achieve the look they have too with a little help. Here are a few hints that you can use:

• Use toupee tape from wig shops or other double sided fashion tape that can be purchase in lingerie stores to keep dresses and plunging tops in place (think J-Lo)

• Apply bronzer and then coco butter to legs and arms to give your legs that sun-kissed glow without needing panty hose

• Use foundation garments such as slimmers or Spanx to smooth out bulges and tummies under pants and skirts or wear seamless panties, boy shorts or thongs.

• Get fitted for a bra to make sure you are wearing the correct cup and back size. A well fitting bra will make you look thinner. If you are pillowing, at the sides and top, then the cup is too small.

• To create the illusion of fuller breast, wear a padded push up bra, or add gel or fabric bra inserts just under the breasts. Or use the knee high filled with rice. It’s cheap and really works.

• Add contour makeup to your cleavage to accentuate the look and highlight shadow to the breasts. Not too much as it will look fake.

Making Essential Oils Work For You

Wednesday, April 11th, 2007

I. History

They have been around since antiquity and credits were given to early Egyptians when they employ essential oils for cosmetics, perfumery, and embalming purposes. Examples of essential oils are peppermint, sandalwood, Citronella oil, lavender oil, and eucalyptus etc. Based from the example given, essential oil is named from the plant material from which it was extracted.

II. Production

Essential oils are produced in different ways. Most are produced by distillation (steam distillation). Distillation is a process of separating liquids of different vapor pressure. In chemistry we learned that a substance with higher vapor pressure has a lower boiling point. The next paragraph illustrates this process. In this process, the plant material are held in a pressing material or kept in a certain container where liquids will be allowed to evaporate. Liquid substances in the plant material with lower boiling points are distilled first while allowing liquid material with higher boiling points to remain as in the case of essential oils. Still, other essences (essential oils) are so hard to extract that they need to undergo a series of complicated process. Jasmine and rose oils are examples. They undergo rigorous distillation process, first by being washed in a sea of solvent material (supercritical carbon dioxide or hexane) to extract a mixture of essential oils (concrete) derived from the process. The concrete will then have to undergo a second phase of distillation process using alcohol-based products, to effectively separate various volatile oil (absolute) products from the distilled material.

III. Uses

Due to their characteristic volatile (readily vaporizable) and molecular properties, essential oils possess characteristic odor, and can be appreciated through smelling, skin application and ingestion.

Essential oils are used most commonly used in

- Perfumery

- Aromatherapists (body treatment, including massage with the use of botanical oils/essential oils) Herbalists, chiropractors (treatment aimed at correcting neurobiological connections in the body), and naturopaths (treatment using natural therapeutic method such as air, water, sunshine), use essential oils in various treatment strategies.

- Medical doctors are also reported to have been using essential oils in the treatment of various dermatological problems. They are also used in trials involving placebo-containing medical products.

- Psychologists and psychiatrists employs a number of essential oils in the treatment of anxiety, depression, hysteria, panic attacks, apathy and a number of psychological problems.

Skin Type

Some people are allergic to essential oils and may cause them to suffer biological aversion to aromatic scents. There are botanical oils that are perfect for a specific skin types, allowing some people to use a specific scent more than another.

Scent Extension

Some aromatic, herbal plants contain a measly amount of essential oils. Infact, it takes more than 8 million flowers of jasmine in order to produce a measly 2 pounds of jasmine essential oils. Some are diluted with Geranium oil or sweet almond oil in order to somewhat extend their fragrance. They do not diminish the scent of the jasmine but theoretically, increasing its usability.

V. Popular Essential Oils

Tan Wisely - Use Tanning Oil

Wednesday, April 11th, 2007

You may be asking yourself, what is a tanning oil and more importantly how is it different from a tanning lotion? We take for granted as consumers that the products we purchase will work, but with a little knowledge, you will be able to read the contents of a tanning oil and select one of superior quality.

I. Why Use Tanning Oil In The First Place?

For Magnification

The multiplying of the ultraviolet light that reaches the skin is called magnification. Tanning oil products supply a refractive prism to further intensify the ultraviolet light that reaches the skin therefore strengthening your tan, giving you faster results.

For Moisturization

Tanning oils come in different blends, but all provide skin moisturization before and after tanning. The key to a beautifully tanned skin is a healthy skin. A well moisturized skin retains its tan longer than dry skin which can shed and flake and will peel away your tan in every skin layer.

For Skin Conditioning

Tanning oils are blended with high levels of tanning ingredients such as Natural Butters, Liposomial Tyrosine Complexes, L-Tyrosine, Essential Oils, Natural Botanical Extracts, Vitamins, Riboflavin, Hemp Seed Oil, Copper, to aid in the tanning process.

Tingle For Deep Tanning

When the skin is stimulated by way of tingle, melanin is forced to go up to the skin’s surface. Tanning oils are formulated with tingle to give the skin better tanning results. It is best that one should start with a low level of tingle to get the body well accustomed, and work from there to a much higher level.

II. Typical Ingredients For Tanning Oils:

1. Sunflower oil. This has superior moisturizing quality, and when blended with high concentrations of Vitamins A, D and E, it is very effective in treating dry, aged, and weathered damaged skin.

2. Coconut oil. Protects and moisturizes the skin while encouraging a glowing dark tan. It is mild to use for sensitive skin.

3. Lanolin. This is taken from the oil glands in the wool of the sheep, and used in skin formulas to prevent irritation that one could get from other oils. It is an emollient, sealing the skin’s moisture in. It is widely used for moisturizing dry and sunburned skin.

4. Titanium Dioxide and Zinc Oxide. These are natural minerals taken from clay and beach sand deposits; they are gentle synthetically-produced chemicals. Both chemicals are approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in sunscreen use. Zinc oxide is a blocking agent preventing damage to extreme skin sun exposure. Titanium dioxide and zinc oxide which redirect and spread out both UVA and UVB rays away from the skin, forming a barrier to shield the skin without clogging the pores or irritating the skin.

5. Cocoa butter. Is an excellent cream, that is extracted straight from cocoa beans, and good for chapped areas of the skin and is widely used to prevent or lighten of stretch marks.

6. Green tea extract. This is very effective in lessening sunburn, and is a powerful antioxidant that counteracts free radicals from the UV radiation of the sun.

7. Vitamin C and E. Are antioxidants that help in skin rejuvenation.

8. Sweet almond oil. The oil is derived from the dried kernels of the almond tree. The oil is used in beauty products because of its rejuvenating qualities. It is a great emollient used to improve the condition of chapped hands and inflammation of the skin for its capacity to soothe the skin. Almond oil is very high in mono polyunsaturated fatty acids, and also naturally contains occurring vitamins A, B1, B2, B6 and vitamin E.

9. Vitamin E. Gives the skin antioxidant protection, that could reduce cancer risk, slows down cell damage, and offer anticarcinogenic protection. Vitamin E also is a natural preservative.

10. Eucalyptus oil. This has a function of opening the pores naturally. It is an essential oil that is readily absorbed by the skin when combined with other oils. It also helps other oils to also be absorbed, thus supporting in the process of moisturization. It is also known as repellent of insects, particularly mosquitoes.

III. Tanning Tips:

- Choose tanning oil with ingredients that moisturize as well as contain broad spectrum protection.

- To keep your pores clear, use tanning oil that is nonacnegenic.

- Stay away from the sun from ten in the morning to three in the afternoon. It is at these hours when the sun is very harmful.

- Use protective glasses.

- Apply tanning oil liberally all over the body, but never to the face. For the face, a cream made especially for the face is recommended.

- Reapply with tanning oil as frequent as possible.
