Teen dating tips for parents Wednesday, January 30th, 2008 At some time or another parents must come to the realization that their teenager is going to want to go on a date with the opposite sex. The thought alone may give you a headache, but try to look at the situation as a learning opportunity for you and your teen. Dating is a great way for young adults to learn how to get along with others as well as build their communication and decision-making skills. As a parent you can help maneuver your teen through this important stage of life by having ongoing communication about healthy relationships and love. When it comes to teens and the dating scene, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) recommends that parents establish some basic ground rules that are appropriate for the child’s age and maturity level before the first date takes place: Meet & Greet. Make it a point to meet all of your teen’s friends–whether it’s group or one-on-one dating. Insist that all of your teen’s friends come into the house so that you can say hello to them face-to-face. Get The Details. Before your child leaves home, find out each person he or she is going out with on the date. Know who is driving, where he or she is going and whether or not adults will be present. Be aware what he or she will do on the date. Have an understanding of when he or she will be home. Just Say No. Make sure your teen knows that alcohol or drug use of any sort is prohibited. Be Available. If for some reason your teen wants to come home early from a date, assure him or her that you will pick him or her up at any time. Also make yourself available to him or her if he or she wants to talk once the date is over. |
